Tips From the Decorators’ Show House
Don’t be discouraged by the expensive, elaborate rooms in a decorators’ show house. Get inspired! With a little pluck and moxie, handy do-it-yourselfers can take some of the treatments from fantasy to reality. We scouted out the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Decorators’ Show House at Long Crandon, the elegant 1921 Timonium mansion, to find the best and least expensive D.I.Y. projects for instant gratification.

1. Forget expensive knickknacks. Cover old books in beautiful paper for an attractive additional to your book shelf. You can find decorative paper at Chelle Papierie in Hampden or The Pleasure of Your Company in Lutherville. Family room by Gatehouse Interiors and Winslow Art & Design.

2. Don’t let your child’s winning ribbons go to waste in an old shoe box. Incorporate them into the décor of the bedroom by hanging on curtains and draperies. Bedroom by The Monogram Shop.

3. Colorful game boards do double duty as wall hangings when mounted on inexpensive boards. Hardware stores like Lowes and Home Depot will custom cut your pieces and, with wood glue and a color copy of the gameboard, you will have an instant wall covering, perfect for any den or game room. 4. Take cupboard doors off cabinets to create attractive display shelves, filled with your finest collection or cheap and cheerful plates to add punch to an old kitchen or butler’s pantry. Butler’s pantry by LcK Interiors.
