tortoiseshellThis Baltimore County collector gives us a peek at her exquisite tortoiseshell and tells us what makes it so special.

How did you get started collecting tortoiseshell?
My husband gave me the first piece as a birthday present.

Why tortoiseshell?
I have always admired tortoiseshell decorative pieces. I am drawn to them because there is something timeless and classic about tortoiseshell, it has great luster and depth.

Where do you find most of your pieces?
Tortoiseshell is quite popular and can be found in shops that carry small antique decorative pieces. There are always dealers at antique shows who carry tortoiseshell items.

Is there one you are particularly fond of and why?
My favorite piece is probably the medium sized box. I love it’s clean lines and color.
