To market, to market

Crisp and cool produce. Sweet and succulent fruit. Fresh roasted nuts. Creamy artisan cheeses. Savory smoked meats and fish. Bursting blooms in summer’s hottest colors. The abundance of local farmers’ markets is the perfect complement to the longer lazier days of summer.

Think globally, but eat locally, and let your palate be your guide this summer as you head out to the many tempting farmers’ markets so close to home.

Baltimore Farmers’ Market
Originally situated at Market Place so city residents could have fresh produce, the Baltimore Farmers’ Market was eventually moved to its current location under the Jones Falls Expressway. Now one of the biggest and most popular, peak Sundays have more than 8,000 visitors, with a wide array of free range eggs, fresh roasted, raw and candied nuts, fresh seafood, cheese and more. Under JFX viaduct, Holliday & Saratoga Streets, 410.752.8632, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, Sundays, June-December

Towson Farmers’ Market
Run by the Towson Chamber of Commerce, this produce-only market is a favorite with local caterers and chefs who value the freshness of seasonal local produce. Pick up a sandwich from one of the nearby shops and stroll the market to get a taste of the harvest in your own backyard – and be sure to take time to smell the flowers they also offer. Allegheny Avenue (between Washington Ave. and York Rd.) 410.825.1144, Thursdays, 1:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. June 15 - November 2

Mill Valley Garden Center & Farmers’ Market
The newest kid on the block, this indoor market opened in 2006 and operates year-round, and requires all produce be certified organic and locally grown from the Chesapeake Bay watershed. In addition the fruits and vegetables, you’ll find fresh roasted coffees by Zeke´s Coffee, organic pet food by Chow Baby2, wheat-free, gluten-free sweets by Sweet Sins bakery, and prepared foods by Soup’s On at Rose’s Cookies, Whiskey Island Pirate Shop, and the Curry Shack. Check out the website for weekly breakfast, lunch, and dinner specials. 2800 Sisson Street, 410.889.6842, Thursday through Sunday, 8:00a.m.-4:00p.m., year-round, http://www.mill-valley.net

Village of Cross Keys Farmers’ Market
Smaller than the others, Village of Cross Key Farmers’ Market was opened to give farmers another opportunity to sell their foods and to give consumers an organic option before the weekend. The Tuesday time slot keeps crowds smaller, which is appealing to the weekday gourmet in search of the perfect pepper, the freshest herbs and the ripest berries. Parking Lot - Village of Cross Keys, 5100 Falls Road, 410.592.6095 , Tuesday: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. June 6 - October 31
