Men's ties

Tie One On

Who says ties have to be such serious business? Go for bright colors and bold designs this holiday season. Loosen your look.

Your man doesn’t look half as handsome on casual Friday. Put him in these cheerfully elegant ties. They’ll turn up the festivity even on a weekday…

Red striped tie by Ermenegildo Zegna, at George Howard.

Orange stripe tie by Luciano Barbera at George Howard; Patterned patchwork tie at J. McLaughlin; Paisley tie by Robert Talbott at Samuel Parker Clothier; Acid green polka dot tie at J.McLaughlin; Pink stripe tie by Breuer at Samuel Parker Clothier; Patterned tie by Emilio Pucci at J.S. Edwards.

Preppy favorite Vineyard Vines is making ties for the locals. The popular line, which made its debut in 1998 by two brothers who left corporate New York jobs to start their business in Martha’s Vineyard, makes custom ties for Gilman School, Brown Advisory and Trust and The Greenspring Valley Hunt Club. Custom clients send artwork to Vineyard Vines, who send back a variety of designs and colors. Orders ship in about 4 – 6 weeks. Minimum order for ties is 100. See http://www.vineyardvines.com for details.

We’re crazy for the crazy designs of tie maker Lee Allison. Allison designs his own fabric rather than simply buying what the silk mills sell. The result is whimsical and sophisticated, like the “Dumbo Meets Mickey” tie, below, $75, and “Yes, We Have No Bananas,” a peeled banana rep tie on forest green silk. Other styles like “Foxes and Foxes” and “Skull and Crossbone” have a subversive quality, perfect for the naughty but nice man in your life. Available at Yoicks.
