Ann Stieff:
Ann, 47, a low- maintenance school teacher with three kids, is in need of an easy redo.
She hadn’t cut her hair for five months. She had never colored her hair. As for make-up, she doesn’t use much. She opts for tinted moisturizer, blusher, and light lipstick everyday.
We asked local stylists and make-up artists to call the brushstrokes…
Hair Stylist: Darryle Barrett,
About Faces Day Spa, Timonium
Ann’s shoulder-length brown hair was 30 percent gray, according to Darryle, a former Atlanta Brave turned “master designer.” Darryle cut Ann’s hair chin length, shorter in back, to show off her long, slim neck and high cheek-bones. He covered Ann’s gray with golden brown highlights, mimicking her natural color, to reflect light and open up her regal face. Weight and curl was giving her a bell effect, he said, and the gray hair washed her out. His maintenance advice: Flatiron every three days. Apply Bumble and Bumble tonic lotion and thickening spray for a glossy bob effect with youthful movement.

Makeup: Kate Volpe, About Faces Day Spa, Timonium
Kate applied eye makeup in earth tones, a palate Ann has always favored—toffee shadow and brown gel liner. “She’s got the most fabulous blue eyes,” Kate said. The only thing she had to do was line them because they are very deep-set. Kate uses all Jane Iredale products, mixing three warm shades of light foundation to conceal Ann’s skin cancer lip scars and the darkness beneath her pretty eyes. The final touch: Glossy peach lipstick. Afterward, Darryle walks past and tells Ann, “A woman just said you look 20 years younger!”

Isabel Rich
Isabel, 55, is a golfer, tennis and bridge player with no interest in fussy grooming. She never wears make-up—not even sunscreen on the golf course—and is prone to simple hair styles.
Hair Stylist: Uno Tuluoglu, Uno Salon, Green Spring Station
Uno, owner of Uno Salon, thought Isabel needed color and volume. She had never colored her hair other than highlights a few years ago. Uno mixed dark lowlights and blond highlights to give Isabel a natural look that’s a little younger and updated. Her super straight hair required layers to give it texture and movement. Although the layers will require some maintenance, even without blow drying they will give her hair some visual interest. He recommends a light blow-dry and styling gel for everyday.

Makeup: Karen Weiner, Studio of Makeup, Pikesville
Karen, owner of Studio of Makeup, right away saw the need to darken Isabel’s eyebrows, which were fading with age (we lose definition with age, she says, so it’s important to define). Isabel hated her heavy lids. Karen put taupe in the crease to help the overhang recede and created a lid with white pencil below the crease. Blue eye shadow brought out her bright blue eyes. Eyeliner and more white pencil, just below the brow bone, made her formerly small eyes seem much larger. Pretty natural pink lipstick, with liner applied last, created a natural, polished look.
