Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Assistant Professor Margaret Weiss gives us the answers to our most important skincare questions. Dr. Weiss’s private practice is in Hunt Valley.
What do you think of non-surgical facelifts?
A more accurate term is “nonsurgical skin tightening.” Known as the Thermage procedure, it uses radiofrequency energy to tighten deep layers of the skin without affecting the surface of the skin. It has greatly improved since it received FDA approval over three years ago and is very effective in a majority of patients. Results usually last from 1 to 1 1/2 years.
What do you think of Restylane/ Botox/Collagen?
Restylane and collagen are the most common wrinkle “fillers” and are great quick fixes. Though temporary, they can greatly improve the appearance of wrinkles. Combined with BotoxCosmetic ™ which safely relaxes the muscles causing frown lines and crows feet, these techniques can help reduce the visible signs of aging.
Which eye cream do you recommend? Moisturizer?
Generally speaking, topical Vitamin A, topical Vitamin C, other antioxidants such as Coenzyme Q10 and green tea extracts, growth factors, and alpha hydroxyl acids are among the best. Some inexpensive moisturizers can help reduce dryness of the skin very effectively, like Cetaphil cream.
Special care for fall chapped skin?
Use gentle cleansers and moisturize while the skin is still damp. Reapplying hand cream after washing is important. If a tan is fading irregularly, use a mild exfoliant followed by moisturizer. Lotions and creams with lactic acid, urea and glycolic acid can be especially helpful, although some may find that they cause temporary stinging.
