Get Deeper

Sports massage was first pressed into action at the Olympic Games of 1924 in Paris. Once considered an indulgence, today it’s routine for many exercise enthusiasts. Timothy Greene recommends deep tissue for post-workout therapy, especially for guys who train strenuously and don’t make time to stretch extensively before and after. Deep tissue is sometimes dubbed the massage that hurts, but a client should feel free to advise his therapist to ease up. Relaxation is important for maximum benefit. The therapist lifts the client’s muscles, kneading using thumbs, knuckles, and elbows, to eliminate toxins and release tension. One hour typically costs between $100 and $120. An avid jock should feel free to take a deep-tissue massage every week if he wants, says Timothy. He works at the DK Salon and Day Spa and independently. Lake Falls Village, 6080 Falls Road, Lake Roland - 410.377.4300.

Just Say: “Sport Manicure and Pedicure”

The Red Door specializes in non-girly manicures and pedicures for men. Using heated citrus cream, the technician massages cuticles instead of pushing them back. Nails are buffed to a high shine—guys get a polished look without a drop of polish. Pedicure includes foot and leg massage. Sport manicure: $25; pedicure: $48. Elizabeth Arden, Village of Cross Keys, 5100 Falls Road, Roland Park - 410.323.3636.

FX Salon Trims Small Talk

Tagged the guy spa, FX Salon features four home-theater waiting areas with 16-foot screens, Internet access, and free drinks, including beer and wine. From the stylist’s chair, watch popular movies on a 15” flat screen—great choices like School of Rock and Die Hard. The ultra-modern salon offers old-fashioned hot shaves. Manicure/pedicure, massages, facials, and hair removal also available. Check the website for movie times. http://www.fxstudios.com, 11270 Pepper Road, Hunt Valley – 410.771.1500.

Spa Mondays

Men have it good at Spa in the Valley. On Mondays, guys who buy one spa service—such as facial or massage—receive assorted complimentary treats. Visit the Tuscan room (for men only), soak in a warm jet pool, laze in the steam room and sauna, and finally enjoy a Swedish shower. Sample Aveda shampoo, conditioner, and body wash while multiple nozzles soothe your skin. Hunt Valley Towne Centre, 118 Shawan Road, Ste. P, Hunt Valley – 410.771.0200.
