Do you have that recurring dream, too, the one in which you’re flying above the city, above the harbor, with the grace of a bird, then dropping fast…and landing on a bouncy, stretchy safety net, like a performer, and throughout the whole experience you’re smiling? We say: Make that dream come true today at the Trapeze School of Baltimore.
In an empowering episode of Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw attends trapeze class and learns to swing and drop to the net like a pro. Baltimore instructor Paul Cannon showed Sarah Jessica Parker how to fly, and now he can teach you, too, if you work hard enough to make it to the intermediate level he leads.
This Trapeze branch opened four years ago. Sister schools can be found in New York and Boston. Classes cost $49 a night for a two-hour session, and only $40 in the morning—all students must pay a $20 registration fee. Class bundle packages are available as are gift certificates, in case you know a fitness enthusiast, circus devotee, or outright daredevil who seems like the perfect recipient this holiday season.
In the first two hours, students of all skill levels and ages learn the basics, practice simple tricks, perform a “knee-hang,” and if they feel ready, throw themselves to a swinging “catcher.”
After a bit of dedicated training, you’ll be able to hook one leg to the swing, while extending the other as straight as a kick-line diva. Tricks are easier in the air, as in water, because your body is weightless.
Keep in mind these tips for trapeze success as you arrive at the scenic Key Highway destination: Don’t walk under the net, pay attention to your instructor, listen well every second, be in touch with your body, and think positively—on top of all that, for the love of flying-through-the-air-with-the-greatest-of-ease, have yourself a grand time.
Call for reservations—the school is flexible with schedule.
