Run Circles Around Santa!

Trainer Neil Westford owns FX Studios and Life FX with business partner Nate Costa. In 2005, he and Nate developed Life FX for people intimidated by the cookie-cutter gym routine. FX Studios is a unique spa and salon that also features movie theaters—Life FX stationed inside has become a go-to source for creative personal training and custom fitness programs. Consultation is free. One-on-one training and group training are available. Classes include yoga, boxing, Zumba, circuit, Pilates, and Bosu Ball.

Neil’s Proactive Fitness Tips:
“The average person gains five to seven pounds throughout the holiday season,” Neil says. “It’s simply a difficult time of year—shopping, partying, stress, overeating and less activity add up.”

  • If you are not on a fitness program, don’t wait. Start one before the holidays!
  • Start slow and have realistic expectations. A healthful weight loss program involves nutritional, cardiovascular, flexibility and strength training. Add the strength training once you have some momentum. Plan to lose one pound of fat per week.
  • Get a certified personal trainer to design a program and hold you accountable to it. In consultation they should spend at least 30 minutes assessing your health and goals.
  • Fail to plan, plan to fail! If you are going to a party, eat something healthful right before you go so that you are not too hungry. Drink one glass of water for every alcoholic drink—you’ll drink less alcohol, hydrate and save calories.
  • Exercise in the morning. This way holiday events won’t make the workout impossible, and you will feel empowered throughout the day.
  • Eat more salads. This is an easy way to cut calories. Vegetables are 70 percent water, are high in fiber and are loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
  • Try to break a sweat every day, even if you are only able to exercise 20 minutes.
  • Stay off the scale and instead pay attention to your clothes. In the beginning, the scale can be frustrating—and misleading—if you are losing fat and gaining muscle.
  • Invite a friend to do the program with you. Help each other stay on track.
  • Sugar is the enemy! Eat junk food in moderation. One cookie instead of four will make a big difference when January rolls around.
  • Mix up your exercise: hike, climb, bike, kayak—bundle up and go for it!
