Local freelance makeup stylist Amanda Walburn trades out beauty products all the time, even when they’re working for her. Sampling new skincare items has always been a favorite hobby. She loves that it’s now part of her job description. We asked Amanda to talk about her must-have supplies, her diet strategy, and other things aesthetic…
What makeup product(s) do you never leave the house without wearing?
Lip-gloss—I’m using a drugstore lip-gloss called Shinylicious by Maybelline lately. And powder mineral foundation, by i.d. bareMinerals—I get it at Sephora. It’s good—it deflects light, conceals and evens out your complexion. And I wear mascara.
Do you pluck or wax your eyebrows?
I tweeze—I touch them up all the time and do a more thorough job once a week. If you feel uncertain about how to shape your brow, I’d suggest waxing.
Do you have a favorite tweezer?
Tweezerman is the best!
Do you have any miraculous cold-weather skincare tips?
Drinking water is always important. And diet, too—salmon is really good and olive oil. I followed a diet called The Perricone Prescription—the three-day facelift. You eat eggs, nuts, fish, olives, and fresh green vegetables. Aloessen eye cream keeps you really hydrated during cold months. It’s eye cream, but lately I’ve been using it everywhere. My friend found it in Japantown in San Francisco. Another good moisturizer is Nivea with Coenzyme Q10.
Do you have a fun fall makeup recommendation?
MAC eye shadow in deep plum is gorgeous for fall.
Which products are okay to buy cheap? Which would you never skimp on?
Lip gloss is a great one to get at the drugstore. I get mascara from the drugstore, too. I invest more in foundation and concealer. I haven’t had very good luck with drugstore eye shadows—there’s just not enough pigment. Brushes are really important. Even if you’re using cheaper products, you can get a nice application if you have artistic brushes with natural bristles. I really like MAC tools.
Any favorite haircare products?
My favorite new hair product is a flatiron called Wet 2 Straight by Remington—it can do the Jennifer Aniston stick-straight hair. I only use it on dry hair, though, to avoid damage. Right now I’m loving Aveda clove shampoo and conditioner, too.
