Insider interview

Molly SternIf you’re like us, you consider shimmering holiday makeup way more important than blinking holiday decorations. We asked CoverGirl makeup artist Molly Stern how to put our best face forward this festive season, and how not to overdo. In demand in Hollywood and beyond, Molly has prettified Reese Witherspoon, Kirsten Dunst, Renee Zellweger and many more wonderfully natural-looking celebs. Her secrets are our gift to you!

We’re talking about the glitzy holiday season. Should we stick to the standard recommendation not to play up both eyes and lips too dramatically?
Yes, if you are going for a dramatic eye, then go minimal on the lips, using a light gloss or lipstick. It’s all about makeup in moderation—choosing a few features, then downplaying the rest! What’s the best way to create dramatic cheek contour for a sexy party look? I love a blush. Blush on the cheeks is an instant facial pick-me-up that helps create a healthy looking glow. Use a cream blush. It goes on smooth and looks very natural because the color is coming from the inside out instead of sitting on the surface of the skin. It also adds a great glow perfect for a sexy party look! A great trick is to use a sheer lip color. Not only does it travel easily in your purse, it also doubles as a face highlighter for added shine!

What’s the most realistic way a non-makeup-artist can achieve sultry, smoky eyes?
Apply a highlighting shadow from the lash line to the brow bone to build a base for a bold, dark eye. Smudge a medium-toned taupe or brown shadow all over the lid up to the crease. Next brush a medium-toned gray or silver shadow into the crease, blending it with the lid color. Define the eye with CoverGirl LineExact Liquid Eyeliner Pen to create a bold lash line for an eye-opening look. It has a great applicator that makes it super easy to work with. You can finish by plumping lashes with a volumizing mascara to make them stand out. CoverGirl LashBlast Mascara gives you thick, dramatic lashes with a few bold strokes.

What are your insider tips for winter skincare?
Moisturize plenty, morning and night! And drink lots of water. How can we power our lipstick to last all night (or at least three or four hours)? CoverGirl Outlast Double Lipshine is a great way to achieve long-lasting lip color! Gives you high shine for a glam look and lasts for up to 10 hours so you don’t have to worry about reapplying color. Exfoliating the lips before applying lipstick will help smooth lips and get them ready to hold color evenly and for a long time. Take a washcloth to lips to gently exfoliate, then dab a sheer layer of foundation over lips with a sponge or fingertips to help neutralize natural lip color and create a clean canvas for color to adhere to.

For overlong day to night family gatherings, how can we stay looking dewy and fresh?
Apply a foundation with a sponge and water for sheer, natural coverage. This allows your real skin to shine through without looking too done-up. You can follow this with a dust of CoverGirl TruBlend Luminous Loose Blush to the apples of the cheeks for a natural looking glow.

What are your favorite CoverGirl lip shades for stocking stuffers?
CoverGirl TruShine Lipcolor is my favorite lip color. It’s perfect because it adds to your natural color and is sheer and smooth. I love Blushberry Shine and Rosy Shine—they look great on everyone.
