Dear Dolly,
What should I add to my fall wardrobe to look stylish but not trendy?
There are lots of pretty pieces out there in suiting and dresses but I think the following are fun additions for fall 2007:
1. High-waist, full-leg pants. In wool or silk or denim---anything you can find that fits you. They are new, flattering and your underpants won’t show anymore!
2. Color! Look for wild bright royal hues in feminine silhouettes that suit your figure. Structured dresses, A-line skirts, cashmere sweaters all can be found in color this season and, with all due respect to black, camel, and gray, our fall staples, walking into a party in a burst of color will immediately set you apart from the crowd.
3. Gloves. Buy a pair in a funky color and wear them everywhere.
4. A heavy, chunky heeled pump, in an unusual color. Put your wedges away. And remember don’t buy black!
Just keep in mind it’s better to wear one new fashion forward piece than three---you want your friends and family to notice what you are wearing and NOT what’s wearing you.
Dear Dolly,
Must I always cover my arms in church or synagogue at a wedding?
It depends on the time of the wedding. An afternoon wedding is more casual and therefore bare arms don’t stand out. A wedding after 6 o’clock, especially if it’s black or white tie, is another story. A matching sheer wrap, a dressy cashmere sweater or a bolero jacket completes the dress and gives it a more elegant and put-together look. But Emily Post might have an opinion. Ask her.
Dear Dolly,
What is the newest rule with skirt and dress lengths?
I love this question because I get it a lot. The first thing you should do before you shorten or lengthen any piece of clothing is sit down. If you can see too much, it needs to be lengthened. Next, look at the shape of the garment. Is it A-line, straight, fluted or box pleated? Above the knee is best for straight. A-line should hit right at the knee or just cover it. Fluted and pleated depends on your age, the fabric and the season. With these styles, I prefer right above the knee or you’ll look like a cheerleader. Stand in front of a mirror and get a good seamstress---they know more than you think---and between the two of you you’ll make the right decision.
